MPLAB REAL ICE USB Device Driver
First Time Installation

For Windows 2000 and XP

To use MPLAB REAL ICE emulator with USB communications, the following steps MUST be taken in order to properly install the device drivers. 

 
USB Preliminaries

The MPLAB REAL ICE emulator should NOT be plugged into a USB port at this time.

You must install the software and drivers first as specified below. Otherwise, the "Found New Hardware Wizard"will not be able to set up the emulator for you.

If you are in the wizard, cancel out of any screens, unplug the emulator, and follow the instructions below.
Software Preliminaries

Install MPLAB IDE v7.43 or higher. You can get a free copy of this from our website, www. microchip.com, or from your local Microchip sales office on CD-ROM.

STEP 1

Plug a driver board into the emulator pod. Then
connect  the MPLAB REAL ICE emulator to the PC with a USB cable. The USB connection provides communication and power for the emulator.

If the USB connection is denied, disconnect other USB devices from the PC and attempt the connection again. If still denied, try a powered USB hub.

If you are using an external USB hub, make sure it has a power supply and is powered or the MPLAB REAL ICE emulator will not work.

STEP 2 - Windows XP SP2

If you have service pack 2, the first time a new USB device is plugged into a Windows XP system, this dialog box will appear indicating that the system has found a new hardware device and asking you whether or not to search for update software. Select "No, not this time".  Click "Next" and continue with the steps below.

STEP 3

The first time a new USB device is plugged in, a small dialog box will appear indicating that the system has found a new hardware device. There also may be a dialog box that informs the user that a device data base is being built or updated.

After these dialogs appear, the "Found New Hardware Wizard" dialog box  is displayed. Select "Install the software automatically (Recommended)" and click "Next" to continue the installation.

STEP 4

During the install, a dialog will pop up stating, "Please wait while the wizard installs the software".

The "Completing the Found New Hardware Wizard" will appear once the Microchip MPLAB REAL ICE emulator software has been installed. Click "Finish" to end the USB installation.

STEP 5

Verify that the driver installed by viewing the Device Manager*, Microchip Tools section.

Complete the MPLAB REAL ICE emulator setup by referring to the MPLAB REAL ICE emulator on-line help file.

Note: If you change PC USB ports, you will have to repeat the steps 2 through 4.

*To open the Device Manager window, click Start>Settings>Control Panel. In Contorl Panel, double click System. In System Properties, Hardware tab, click Device Manager.
